Daughter in Spanish = Hija
The word daughter in Spanish is another very frequently used word. On my trips to Latin America I have noticed that most families are very large and that women outnumber men. That’s why the word daughter in Spanish is used a lot, just as much as the word son in Spanish. In Hija the letter H is silent and the letter J is pronounced like the H in hobby. So the word sounds ee-ha. In the following paragraphs I’ll explain to you other variations of the word daughter in Spanish, such as daughters, and daughter-in-law. But first let me quickly show you a few words in Spanish that will help you indicate and understand whose daughter someone is talking about at a given time. I´m talking about the words that express possession, such as my, your, our and their. Let’s begin with how to say “my”.
My daughter in Spanish = Mi hija
Suppose I want to talk about my daughter in Spanish. To say “my” I only put and “m” and an “I” together and that’s it. Now let’s see how to say your daughter in Spanish.
Your daughter in Spanish = Tu hija
Very simple. Say “tu hija” when you want to talk about the daughter of a person you are addressing directly. The next phrase is our daughter in Spanish.
Our daughter in Spanish = Nuestra hija
The word nuestra ends in “a” because among all the words to denote possession in Spanish, the word for “our” is the only one that must end with either “a” or “o” to indicate the gender of the object/person being referred to. Use the word nuestra to say our daughter in Spanish. The next word is more simple. Take a look at how to say “their daughter” in Spanish.
Their daughter in Spanish = Su hija
That is how we say their daughter in Spanish. Very easy to remember. You can use all the previously explained Spanish words for my, your, our and their with the word daughter to clearly indicate whose daughter you are talking about. If you want to talk in plural and mention more than one daugher, you would only add an s to the word hija as I exemplify in the following phrase.
Daughters in Spanish = Hijas
Not difficult at all. Add an s and you make it plural. Now, if you want to ask someone if they have children, independently of whether they’re daughters or sons, the following word is the word for children in Spanish.
Children in Spanish = Hijos
The word children also take the Spanish words for my, your, our and their when you want to you express the different relationships among family members. Finally, let’s take a look at daugher-in-law in Spanish.
