I’m going to walk you through some of the most common ways to say sorry in Spanish or apologize in Spanish – same difference more or less. Obviously some of these are situational specific so use discretion when using these Spanish phrases. They are subtlety different.

Perdón. I’m sure you can actually guess what this word means. It sounds a lot like the English word Pardon, doesn’t it? Guess what? You’re right. It does mean pardon in Spanish. So when you use the word perdón in Spanish it literally means to pardon yourself in Spanish. It also is the same meaning of saying excuse me in Spanish. Perdón is more general and used in passing. Let’s say you wanted to say pardon me in Spanish or excuse me in Spanish where you clearly wanted to identify yourself. You would say perdóname, spoken as “perr-donn-ah-may”.

Disculpa is another great way to say sorry in Spanish or to apologize in Spanish. The word disculpa can be translated in English as an apology or another way of saying excuse. Here’s a quick reference on how to say disculpa in Spanish – dees-kool-pah. This is a great way to say sorry in Spanish when you’re apologizing for something you said wrong, you missed an appointment or an event, you yelled when you didn’t mean to, etc. Really, it’s just another way to apologize in Spanish. If you wanted to say forgive me, you could conjugate the word the same way we did Perdon. If you wanted to specify you as the object, you would say discúlpame. You would pronounce this as dees-kool-pah-meh. You could also say mil disculpas which translates to a thousand apologies in English. Pretty simple.

What if you wanted to say you’re sorry in Spanish or apologize in Spanish in a much more serious way. Let’s say for a death in your family or someone losing their job. Lo siento is a great way to express remorse or ask for forgiveness from someone. This is a great general way of saying sorry in Spanish across all situations. You’ve more than likely heard this in the past before. You could also say lo siento mucho which translates to I’m very sorry.

Like when your girlfriend catches you using Tinder, stealing someone’s wave in the surf lineup, or skipping leg day at gym. Lo lamento would be your go to here. Lo lamento literally means I regret it. It’s the same thing as saying I’m terribly sorry in Spanish. Like saying I really screwed up, will you forgive me?

I often get asked this question for how to apologize in Spanish. How do you say I’m sorry about what happened in Spanish? For this Spanish phrase you could say Siento lo ocurrido. This would be a great way of saying sorry in Spanish if you were trying to empathize with someone.

Another common question I get is how to say I owe you an apology in Spanish. Let’s take a look at that real quick. Te debo una disculpa. Debo translates to I should. So in this case, the literal translation from English to Spanish is – To you I should give you an apology. Different, I know, but that would be how you would say I owe you an apology in Spanish.

Let’s take a look at the first way to say its my fault in Spanish. Es cupla mía. This is one I use more often than the others I’m about to mention. Culpa is like saying guilt in Spanish. It’s my guilt would be the literal translation.  Another way to say sorry in Spanish is me equivoque. This is like saying its my fault rather than its my guilt.
